Check the Practitioner on the AHPRA Register

Every doctor, nurse practitioner and pharmacist who practises in Australia must be registered. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) keeps a public register that anyone can search without charge on its website.

Ask the clinic for the full name of the practitioner you will see, then search for it. The entry shows the profession, the type of registration, and any conditions or restrictions on how that person may practise. If the name is not there, or the clinic will not tell you who the practitioner is, treat that as a warning sign.

The register tells you a person is allowed to practise. It does not tell you whether a service suits you, so it is the first check and not the only one.

Check How the Consultation Happens

The Medical Board of Australia expects a doctor to hold a real-time telehealth consultation with a patient before prescribing for someone they have not seen before. A form, a chat window or an email exchange on its own does not meet that expectation.

A consultation that is doing its job has a few visible features. Your identity is confirmed. You are asked about your history and your current medicines. The risks are explained. And the practitioner is free to say no.

Check Who Dispenses the Medicine

In Australia a prescription medicine is dispensed by a pharmacy, under the responsibility of a registered pharmacist. Ask the clinic which pharmacy dispenses its scripts. Pharmacists appear on the same AHPRA register as doctors, and pharmacy premises are approved by the pharmacy authority in each state or territory.

When the parcel arrives, read the label. A dispensed medicine usually carries a pharmacy label, which typically includes the name of the pharmacy, your name, directions for use and the date of dispensing. A vial with no pharmacy label may not have come through that system.

The product is labelled for research use only, or as not for human use. There is no Australian business name, ABN or street address. The test certificates cannot be traced to a laboratory that will confirm them.

One of these alone may have an innocent explanation. Several together should stop you.

What These Checks Cannot Tell You

A clinic can pass every check on this page and still not be the right fit. Registration and a real pharmacy show that the basic structure is in place. They say nothing about fees, how quickly you can reach a person, or what follow-up is offered. Ask about those before you pay.
